A 19thc Campaign Writing Slope

19th century
Description

A 19thC military style campaign writing slope in well grained mahogany with brass corner caps banding and strapping. UNUSUAL SPRUNG SECRET DRAWER. Pin lockable side drawer. Brass side carrying handles. Brass lock engraved VR but the quality and style suggest very early Victorian in age say 1838-40. Two brass topped rectangular glass inks (with chips but functional)

Bone turned pulls to the section lids in the interior. The secret drawer is located within the pen tray and springs from its location when a divider is lifted...this I have never seen in the many writing slopes I have handled over the years. Re baized writing surfaces. The lock functions but is well worn..the key works but with care. There are two holes in the edge of the interior surround casing, these were probably for a candle sconce which is now absent. No missing brasswork but with some old minor repairs and a crack in the top which is hardly discerned without being told to look for it, see last photo.

Size.....50 cm wide 16 cm high and 24.5 deep closed and 49.5 opened.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
