Description

Not too many of these around, most especially in this outstanding condition.

A really attractive and different style of clock that will enhance any household.

The convex, arcaded, white enamelled dial is in perfect condition with no cracks, chips or crazing., enhanced with beautifully cut hands.

The 8 day, platform escapement, movement strikes on the half-hour and the hour on a bell, giving a lovely crisp tone. It has just been fully overhauled by our BHI registered staff and carries our usual 12mths full parts and labour guarantee.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in late 18th-century France during the Louis XVI period, a lyre clock features an openwork case shaped like a classical musical lyre. The design typically incorporates neoclassical motifs, such as sunburst finials and laurel garlands, surrounding a central pendulum mechanism.

These clocks were typically constructed using fine hardwoods or marble for the base and lyre frame, combined with chased gilt bronze mounts. Dials were usually executed in white enamel, often decorated with delicate hand-painted floral swags and Arabic or Roman numerals.

Authentic pieces generally display heavy, hand-chased gilt bronze mounts, hand-painted enamel dials with twin winding holes, and a pendulum integrated into the lyre frame structure. Look for fine hand-carving or precision casting on metalwork rather than modern stamped elements.

Positioning a lyre clock on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard top, or formal library desk creates an immediate focal point. Pair it with neutral backdrops, contemporary artwork, or minimalist glass vases to balance the intricate classical gilded detailing.

Dust the wooden and gilded surfaces gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or chemical polishes that can remove gilding. Mechanical movements should be serviced by a professional horologist every three to five years.
