Antique Victorian Mahogany Apothecary Box or Chest

19th century
Description

This is a great Antique mahogany apothecary box with a large vacant brass initial plate, brass escutcheon and drawer handle. The lift up lid reveals the burgundy velvet lined interior with twelve glass bottles, a couple with old labels.

"Antimonial Wine, Savory Moore & Davidson, Chemists to the Royal Family.136 New Bond St London".

& 'Fine Turkey Rhubarb, Cox's tasteless antibillious pills . A H Cox Brighton.

Contents for these chests would have been purchased from many different outlets.

The front edge of the open Apothecary box has a small brass pin that keeps the drawer secure when the box is closed. Inside the drawer is a lift out tray containing scales , weights and a bone measuring spoon. Below the tray is a further drawer containing a glass mortar & pestle, two glass jars with the original chamois tops with the old labels on. One contains spermicide create from Savory Moore & Davidson, Chemists to the Royal Family.136 New Bond St London". and the other is Blistering Plaster from Savory Moore & Davidson, Chemists to the Royal Family.136 New Bond St London". it has one small glass bottle at the back of the drawer.

Currently no working key.

It comes with an old Sunday Times article on apothecary boxes and on the works of Lister.
