Sewing tables, also known as work tables, emerged in the late eighteenth century as small occasional pieces designed specifically for women to store needlework and embroidery tools. Popularised during the Georgian, Regency, and Victorian eras, these tables often combined functional storage drawers with fine decorative cabinetmaking elements such as wood inlays and tapered legs.

Late nineteenth-century tables of this style were primarily crafted from solid mahogany and mahogany veneers. Decorative borders often incorporated contrasting timbers such as satinwood, boxwood, or ebony for fine stringing and crossbanding, finished with brass drawer handles and castors or spade feet.

Authentic pieces from around 1880 feature hand-cut or early machine-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, natural age-related oxidisation on the timber underside, and original brass hardware showing slight patina.
