Antique French Ormolu, Bronze and Red Marble Louis Xv Clock Set

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1870 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

An exceptional antique French Louis XV style clock set, circa 1870. Beautifully made in ormolu (finely gilded Bronze Dore), patinated bronze and Rouge Griotte Marble. The clock is mounted in a bronze orb floating in the ormolu clouds. Cherubs representing love climb on top of the clock symbolising love conquering time. One holds a flaming torch with which to enflame his victims with love and the other holds cupids arrow.

The cherubs are finely modelled in patinated bronze. The base is formed of ormolu with swept scrolling feet and red marble. Candelabra also have red marble bases and a Rococo urn that holds four scrolling acanthus arms aloft. The bronze work is signed "F C" for the Parisian bronze founder F Camus.

The dial is formed of applied letters to the bronze orb with finely cut serpentine hands, beautifully hand detailed.

The French movement is by Vincenti and is of high quality. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock running, please ask and we will send you a link.

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration and there are no losses. The bronze patination is original and is also in excellent condition with just an occasional mark and discolouration. The marble is also in excellent condition with a good polish and no significant damage. Candelabra have previously been electrified and have a hole for the cable. Candelabra are slightly distorted.

Vincenti et Cie clockmaker's mark on the movement back plate. The bronze founders mark of F Camus of Paris.

Complete with original pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 18th-century France, a clock garniture is a decorative mantelpiece set consisting of a central clock flanked by two matching accessories, typically candelabra or urns. The Louis XV style is defined by Rococo design principles, featuring fluid asymmetrical curves, organic scrollwork, and mythological imagery such as cherubs or putti.

French garniture sets from the 18th and 19th centuries typically feature mercury-gilded bronze, known as ormolu, combined with patinated dark bronze figures. The bases were frequently constructed from polished marble varieties, including rouge royal or black marble, to provide structural stability and visual contrast.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy mercury gilding with hand-chased detailing, precise casting lines, and dark patinated bronze elements. Antique clock movements often bear French maker stamps, serial numbers, or medals on the back plate, alongside hand-carved marble mounts showing natural vein variations.

Place the three-piece set symmetrically along a period fireplace mantelpiece or a grand sideboard to establish a formal anchor point. To blend the set into contemporary schemes, pair it with minimalist artwork or modern architectural mirrors to balance the heavy classical ornamentation.

Clean gilt bronze gently with a soft dry cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes or chemical cleaners that can strip the delicate gilding or patination. Keep marble bases free of dust, seal them periodically with specialized marble wax, and ensure the mechanical clock movement is serviced by a professional horologist every five years.
