Fine London Made Bur Walnut Tea Caddy

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A fine quality Victorian period bur walnut tea caddy. The caddy has a maker’s address brass inset label for Bridge Street, Piccadilly, London. The actual makers name is not given and I have been unable to identify it although the quality of the box speaks for itself. The caddy is of a simple form but every part is beautifully made. The veneer is bur walnut of a great colour and figuring, the interior is also veneered in the same but also has coromandel wood to the edges. The interior has one removable box canister with lining and the most superb original cut glass mixing bowl both are in excellent condition. The mixing bowls in tea caddies are nearly always missing or damaged and this is the original and perfect. The tea caddy retains a working lock and key and is in overall excellent condition with only a small veneer repair to the back. A great example of the finest early Victorian craftsmanship in a simple and elegant design. C.1840.
