Large Antique English Brass String Box / Dispenser with Scissors C.1870

Description

These string boxes were made in two sizes, this one being the larger of the two and more difficult to find and hence the most sought-after.

A beautiful example with an all-over repousse decoration including a gargoyle's face recurring around it's circumference.

The lid fits perfectly well with a hole in the top to dispense string and twine easily, the original scissors being at hand in their own integral sheath.

The box is signed on the underside A F C for Adolph Frankau & Co, 121, Queen Victoria Street, London.

Superb condition having been professionally re-polished to gleam. The diameter of the base measures 4 1/4" and the box stands 5 1/2" tall (excluding scissors), the scissors measure 5" in length.
