Large French pressed horn snuff box commemorating the return of Napoleon''s ashes to Paris.
December 15th, 1840,
The cortege passing the Arc de Triomphe, down the Champs Elysées.
The cortege is said to have been so heavy it had to be drawn by sixteen black horses with many attendants.
The title reads:
TRANSLATION DES CENDRES DE NAPOLEON 15 10 *** 1840
The oblong box with integral hinge and well fitting lid.
In good sound condition with no damage or repair.
A fascinating pressing of the subject with fine architectural details, wear to some high relief elements.
I believe this is the largest version of this rare box.
Width 4,1/8'' or 105mm, weight 90 grams.
