John Obrisset English Pressed Horn Snuff Box Signed Ob

18th century
Description

Rare early 18th century English pressed horn snuff box, signed OB for John Obrisset

Titled LA REmMONNEE (fame)

Allegorical, almost certainly commemorating the capture of Sardinia and Minorca, 1708.

Winged Fame, blowing a trumpet with a Royal banner, drives two powerful carriage horses,

Queen Anne sits resplendent, holding a sword and palm leaf, being crowned with a victors laurel wreath by winged Victory.

In excellent glossy condition with no damage or repair, tiny edge nick to the top.

The image still clear and sharp with very little wear to the high relief.

Diameter 2,3/4" or 71mm, weight 51 grams.

*********************************************************

John (Jean) Obrisset was considered the premier maker of horn and tortoiseshell boxes. He was the son of an ivory carver, a Huguenot who emigrated to London from Dieppe, France with the Restoration. He converted his father's ivory carving techniques to that of heating, moulding and carving both horn and tortoiseshell. He was not recorded as a member of any of the guilds, but his name (usually monogrammed OB) appears on many horn and tortoiseshell boxes of the late 17th and early 18th century. Obrisset specialized in portraits, particularly of English monarchs both historical and contemporaneous, as well as mythology. Many of his moulds were drawn from commissioned medals, particularly by those by John Roettiers. Obrisset's works date from 1705-1728, the latter being the last known date on his boxes. Obrisset is represented in both horn and tortoiseshell in major museums, both in America and the United Kingdom.
