Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1800s.
The front has an inlaid escutcheon which houses the working key.
The central cartouche reveals where this example comes from, R. Ackermann / Manufacturer of Supreme Watercolors / 191 Regent Street (London).
The top section has a lift out tray containing the square paint dishes, some porcelain and some later refills. There is also a porcelain palette and bowl. The brass pin at the front is removed to allow the drawer to be opened to reveal to more ceramic palettes, these are later replacements but in keeping and complete the box.
A really stunning example in excellent condition with some wear commensurate with age. Measures 9" x 6 1/2" x 3 1/2" tall while closed.
