Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

This early 19th-century Regency period miniature mahogany bookcase demonstrates fine craftsmanship in a dark brown timber with a warm patina. The upper section comprises a glazed door with astragal glazing bars and light-coloured interior shelving, while the lower portion incorporates a slatted tambour front and a single drawer fitted with small bone knobs and a diamond-shaped escutcheon. The entire cabinet stands upon neat bracket feet and displays visible signs of age across the polished surfaces. Measuring 71 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 25.5 cm deep, this diminutive piece suits placement on top of a sideboard in a gentleman's library or study, providing compact display and storage space for small books or curiosities in a home today.

Miniature bureau bookcases were crafted in the 18th and 19th centuries either as apprentice pieces to demonstrate joinery skills, travelling salesman samples, or luxury novelty items for estate desk space.

These pieces were constructed using primary woods such as Cuban or Honduran mahogany, alongside hand-blown glass panes, brass fittings, and bone or ivory escutcheons.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints, age-appropriate oxidation on secondary pine or oak drawer linings, natural wood patination, and proportional construction detailing.

Position the cabinet on top of a sideboard, desk, or mantlepiece to serve as a decorative focal point and store small collectibles, letters, or trinkets.

Dust the surface regularly with a clean microfibre cloth, apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually, and keep the object away from direct heat and sunlight.
