Mrs Fitzherbert was mistress of and married to George IV but the marriage was annulled by his father George III because she was catholic.

The sliding lid reveals a divided interior with the original pink lining paper, for reels and if you look at the sides of the box there are a line of fine holes where the cotton would have been threaded through from each reel inside. There is a secret concealed base drawer to the underneath which is pulled out from the base.
