Description:

This is a rare antique English early 18th century solid oak table box, boasting lovely colour and patination, with original carvings and drawer, circa 1700, in excellent condition. Ideal for storing paperwork or small valuables or a small coffee table etc. The box features a flat three-plank top, secured with the original iron strap hinges inside the box. The box incorporates what we believe to be is the original key escutcheon, with a later restored working lock and key. The front of the box is profusely carved with two fine quality original large lunette leaf carvings, with a row of guilloche star carvings below. The lid opens to reveal a large storage clean storage area which is clean, dry, practical and usable. The box is designed with a wide drawer below, which boasts a secret locking mechanism inside the box, where a wooden peg locks the drawer. The peg needs to be removed in order to open the drawer. The drawer is constructed with primitive butt joints and retains its original twin plank drawer bottom.

Condition Report:

This oak writing box is in excellent condition given its age. Nominal old use marks to the top, external sides and leading edges, but nothing significant considering the age of the item (see photos). The carvings on the front of the box are full age and original. The interiors are clean, dry, and usable. The box retains its original iron strap lid hinges. The box retains its original lid, drawer, floor, sides, back and bottom. The box features a later working lock and key.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
