19th C Superior Vizagapatem Box with Sadeli Mosaic

A superior and very fine Vizagapatam Jewellery Box. This wooden Anglo Indian box is decorated with the most impressive stylistic fusion of European form with Indian decorative detailing known as Sadeli Mosaic ( when facetted rods were banded together to form geometric patterns often using a mixture of bone/ivory/pewter/silver/ horn and gemstones).

 

The box is hinged and opens to reveal the wooden interior with red velvet under lid and on the base. It has a key that locks the box.

 

A wonderful item, circa late 19th century and in fabulous antique collector's condition.
