A Mid-19th Century Mahogany Writing Box

Description

A mid-19th Century mahogany Writing Box in good original condition. The solid case itself is inlaid with a brass shaped cartouche to the lid and is bound in brass to all corners and recessed brass carry-handles.

It opens to reveal the original gilt-tooled leather surface and fitted compartment with the original ink bottles. Both leather surfaces lift to reveal storage inside. The upper section of the writing slope lifts open to reveal the larger storage area, also there are three 'secret' drawers hidden behind a spring-loaded panel in this section. There is a further full-width drawer accessible from the side of the box, which opens once the securing pin has been removed.

Dated: c.1840-50
