In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
Inside, the box is fitted with a good quality dark leather writing surface with a gold tooled edge. It comes with two glass inkwells and a pen tray. Both top and bottom sections of the leather surface lift up to reveal extra storage space below.
The box is in good condition for its age with a beautiful patina and displays very nicely.
The brass shield escutcheon around the key has been replaced at some point and one of the inkwells is missing its lid. There are some general signs of age and use, some knocks and light scuffs, a few old shrinkage splits on the outside of the box but nothing untoward or detrimental. Overall the box displays very well.
