Michael Johnson Antiques has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
The central cartouche depicts Lord Ram ,Sita and Hanuman and the two side cartouches contain fearsome roaring lions. The two sides are again with 3 different cartouches . On the left side is a winged god and two birds. On the right side is winged god in different pose also with two different birds . The front portrays another winged god or GOD GARUDA .The whole is carved in very finely detailed carving of coiled scroll work, flowers, leaves, detailed borders and Kutch type scroll work interspersed with animals and birds, on the top oblong panel appears a wonderful owl with wings outstretched.
The back contains a central cartouche depicting lord VISHNU surrounded by a riot of carved leaves , flowers and four exotic birds.
This is one of the finest boxes we have handled. One small chip to wood ( see photos) otherwise in remarkable good strong condition and MUSEUM WORTHY.
Excellent colour , patina and delightful deep musky smell of antique sandalwood. Has original sales label on base “ FAKIR CHAND AND RUGHNATH-DILHI -INDIA. NO.64 RS.30/-
