Antique English Burr Elm Lap Desk / Writing Box - Brass Mounted C.1860

Description

A wonderfully decorative Victorian writing slope or lap desk dating to around 1860 and unusually finished in Burr Elm, which makes a refreshing change from the more commonly found wood finishes. The deep rich Cognac colour is further enhanced with brass mounts on all four corners, the centre and the escutcheon.

The interior is quality all-round with a contrasting pale Elm timber having been used on the inside of the lid and the variety of lidded compartments including the removable pen tray. There are two original brass topped inkwells, both without damage.

Under the top of half of the gold tooled leather writing surface is a large storage compartment for letters, stationery and the like.

Superb condition, measuring 14" x 9 1/2" x 4" tall at rear.
