There is a brass inlaid plaque to the top with an old engraving "D. Bull" I think. There is a large drawer to one side opened with a flush brass handle.
The interior is quite wonderful, the quality seen with brass inlaid corners and a arm which can fit at various angles to keep the lid open.
When open the box forms a writing slope sometimes known as a lap desk, this would certainly not be put on one's lap as the size and weight is prohibitive. The red leather has gold tooling, both sides opening to reveal large compartments underneath for papers and the like.
The top section has a set of three secret drawers operated by pushing a concealed button under one of the inkwells which releases the spring loaded cover. There is another tiny secret drawer which shoots out when one of the dividers is lifted, most unusual.
The box comes with two original brass topped inkwells, a rarity these days, one is damaged with the lid just lifting off rather than screwing. There is also a cylindrical wooden ruler which sits in its custom formed concave compartment.
All in all a really impressive piece in superb condition, alas no key. Measures a mammoth 18" x 12" x 7 3/4" while closed.
