Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1880s.
This section then opens again to reveal a Mahogany interior with a leather covered stationery rack which also includes a leather bound ink blotter. There is a Mahogany fitted section with removable pen tray, another section with tilting lid which has a little removable Mahogany tray for nibs and the like.
There is a brass topped crystal travel inkwell (a couple of chips) included .. also the dip pen shown.
The slope section which acts as the desk, also opens with a Mahogany lined interior.
The piano hinges are all solid brass and the lock a top-notch Bramah (alas,no key), a true sign of quality, this would have been an expensive box in it's day,
The leather exterior is embossed in a quilted design and has a heavy duty cast brass carry handle to the top, coordinating with the brass escutcheon.
There is an age crack to the underside secondary wood, insignificant but mentioned for accuracy.
A superb piece measuring a large 14 1/2" x 10 1/2" x 6" tall while closed.
