Description:
This is a fine quality antique English late 17th century solid oak bible box, boasting lovely colour and patination, with original carvings, circa 1680 – 1700, in good condition. The box features a moulded two plank top, which is secured with what we believe to be the original iron strap hinges. The underside of the box features two later oak guide bars, to secure the lid in place when closed. The box incorporates an iron plate and locking clasp, with a later working lock and key. The front of the box is profusely carved with fine quality original circular floral carvings. Inside, the interior is clean, dry and practical and usable. The interior also retains its original floorboards and backboards. The box sits on a moulded plinth base. The back of the box retains its original panels along with the original floor. Overall, this trunk boasts a lovely rich original colour and patination.
Condition Report:
The bible box is in good condition. Nominal old use marks to the top (cup marks), external sides and leading edges, but nothing significant considering the age of the item (see photos). The carvings on the front of the box are original. The interior is clean, dry, and usable. We believe the iron strap hinges to be original. The box retains its original lid, floor, sides and back. Later guide bars added to the underside of the lid, to secure the lid in position when closed. The box incorporates an iron plate and locking clasp, with a later working lock and key. The box boasts its original colour and patination to the exterior. The box is solid in joint; it does not wobble on the floor and is ready to use.
