Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
The box itself is of finely figured rosewood, unusually inset to the lid with gold-framed cartouches of hair-decorated ‘memento’ images, one of which is dated 1840, with a vacant oval brass escutcheon below.
The lid opens to reveal a stunning array of sewing items; tools and equipment.

These comprise: 4 pairs of scissors; 2 silver thimbles; bodkins; stiletto; penknife; tweezers; corkscrew…and a very fine engraved silver pencil by Samson Morden. A very fine Sewing Box indeed. 14ins x 10ins; 5ins high.
