Rare Antique English Sterling Silver & Tortoise Shell Box / Caddy - George Fox

Description

Made by the renowned silversmith George Fox, this superb box is perhaps a tea caddy, I am unsure as I haven't seen anything quite like it before.

The cannister itself is made from glossy antique tortoiseshell and then decorated with heavy cast silver mounts and a hinged lid.

The domed lid has a repousse scene of a gathering, hard to make out exactly what they are doing or celebrating. The sides are mounted with a two borders top & bottom, one fairly linear and the other floral garlands meeting at what looks to be cherubs heads at the top.

All pieces of silver bear a hallmark for London 1896 together with the makers mark GF for George Fox, a good Victorian example.

Excellent condition without damage and measuring 3" tall with a base diameter measuring 2 1/2".
