Exquisite English William IV Tunbridge Ware Jewelry / Desk Box C.1830

Description

A stunning small jewellery or desk-top box, perfect for either a lady or gentleman if you wanted to put it to use; equally it would make an superb addition to your Tunbridgeware collection.

A nice early example with a multitude of wood specimen's in a highly decorative parquetry design.

Originating in the Georgian town of Tunbridge Wells, Kent, visitors began buying wooden souvenirs from the woodworkers of surrounding areas such as Tonbrige and Speldhurst.

During the 1830's James Burrows developed the tessellated mosaic technique which became the most well known type of Tunbridge Ware.

There is what looks to be the original key with the box, however it doesn't seem to be working but I will include it as it looks very smart in the inlaid escutcheon to the front.

The box has been newly lined in a hand-marbled paper, a good clean interior ready for use.

Superb condition with a good polished patina. 8" x 4 3/4" x 2 1/4" tall.
