A Colonial Camphor Wood Brass Bound Strong Box

Description

An early 19th century camphor wood brass bound colonial strong box. Void interior. Original exterior brass banding iron lock hinges and quadrant lid stay. (No key) Lovely colour and patina. This box was fitted with'screw downs' the holes for which can be seen in the right and left sides. These originally contained screw shafts (the right hand one appears to still be in place) which were used to secure the box to a wooden surface. Once the lid was locked the box could not be picked up and taken away. Screw downs are seen on some early military or naval writing slopes. Some age related blemishes and cracks and some evidence of (treated) woodworm.
