Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1850s.
The large square brass inlays are further enhanced with a floral and foliate engraved decoration.
The interior reveals a gold embossed leather writing surface with compartments under both panels for storage of stationery, letters and the like (there is an age crack one the back of one of these panels, of no consequence, but mentioned for accuracy). There are two brass topped inkwells either side of the pen rest with room underneath for storage of pens, pencils, nibs etc.
The top of the box has wonderful rounded edges on all four sides, a decorative and refined flourish I have included the tasseled key for decorative purposes only, I can't get the lock to work, but think it looks great with the burgundy tassel.
