Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1800s.
Made from stunning and vibrant red Mahogany with stunning inlay to the lid including an enormous central shell and highly decorative corners; the top is finished with what looks to be Tulip Wood cross-banding.
The box has drop side handles and a side drawer for papers.
The box also has a riser mechanism to enable it to be used as a reading stand/ lectern. The wooden reading stand is stored on the inside and pinned into the two brass holes to the top lid when required.
The front has a brass escutcheon engraved by the makers, a little hard to make out exactly the City where Cleveland Works was based, there is also a Lion and Unicorn Coat of Arms engraved.
There is a tasseled key which does work but requires a little fiddle, it is an extremely old lock but it's nice to have a key for decorative purposes. You can see an old small repair at the front around the lock area, mentioned for accuracy.

The box is quite magnificent, which has been re-polished to showcase it's exquisite decorative qualities.
Excellent condition measuring 16" wide x 9 1/2" deep x 5 1/4" tall.
