Magnificent Large Burl Walnut Stationery / Writing Box / Inkstand

Description

An outstanding antique desk set, made in the most wonderful burl walnut ... heavily figured and deep cognac in colour.

There are two genuine heavy Victorian inkwells at the front, both with brass collars and hinge in perfect working order, and the glass without damage.

Between the inkwells is an ebonised pen tray which tilts to remove; the storage underneath is for dip pens, nibs and the like.

The lid is an exquisite shape and opens to reveal a large stationery caddy with various compartments. The front has a shield shaped brass escutcheon, which comes with a tasselled key; the key and lock do work but it is a little inconsistent and needs playing with to open and close sometimes.

A wonderful impressive piece with the base measuring 15" x 7" deep and the back stands 9" tall. Excellent condition and dating to around 1860.
