M Lees and Sons has dated this piece to the 1890s.
. Fitted with a brass escutcheon and lock and retaining a key .

The interior lined with crimson red paper and having a division in the centre with brass plates labelled "In" and "Out" .
The door fitted with a gilded brass manufacturers trade label stating "Hardman , Powell & Company Birmingham Fecit" in Gothic script.

Hardman , Powell and Company were the later reincarnation of Hardman & Co , the company established in Birmingham in 1838 as manufacturers of stained glass and ecclesiastical fittings . The company worked closely initially with A.W.N .Pugin and latterly with his son E.W Pugin .

The company was a major influence on Catholic Church architecture and decoration in particular and the Gothic Revival in general .
Possibly commissioned for use in a private chapel or Gothic-inspired country house.
