Rare Bur Yew Deed Box

A very unusual and fine bur yew deed box. The box is veenered all over in bur yew with a small piece of box wood line inlay to the top. The edge of the lid and the base is applied with a thumbnail moulded edge that is made of oyster cut yew, which gives a striking pattern. The lid inside is veneered in mahogany and the box lined with unpolished mahogany. This is a most unsual box and as it is deed box shaped this is the most likely use but if it is then it is the king of deed boxes. The design and use of woods is very similar to William and Mary period furniture and it may have been designed to go with this period of furniture. The whole has an untouched colour and patina and it has a small amount of restoration. It does retain the original working key. C.1840.
