Superb Georgian Mahogany Knife Box

A superb quality Georgian period knife box in excellent untouched condition. The box is of a large size and may indicate a Northern counties attribution. The front has an elegant and elaborate serpentine shape with inlaid columns to the side. The box is heavily line inlaid with a stripe line and with crossbanding in walnut. The centre of the lid is occupied by a large inlaid paterae in boxwood and walnut. The mahogany veneers are all of the highest quality and the escutcheon, handle and lock are all original and the lock has a working key. There has been a little old repair at the side of the escutcheon and the hinge are later nineteenth century ones. The interior is all original, retaining the divider for the knives, which is again line inlaid as is the interior of the lid. The box has a collection of later knives within it which work very well and are included with the box. This is a good example of it's type as you will see and a great period country house item in excellent untouched condition. C.1780.
