Pietra Dura Box

19th century
Description

Circa 1880, Italian sarcophagus shaped ebony box. The box is fitted with five Pietra Dura panels, and has a hinged lid. The underside of the lid and interior of the box are lined with panels of box wood. The box has been decorated in the Pietra Dura technique, with black marble panels inlaid with different coloured stones creating a delicate floral and leaf pattern. Each of these panels is different and all hand-made. The box stands on four turned ebony bun feet and is in good original condition.
