C18th George III period Chippendale period mahogany tea chest or caddy .

Rectangular mahogany tea caddy of sarcophagus casket form raised on carved ogee- shaped bracket feet . The lid edge and canted corners inlaid with boxwood and ebony 'barber's-pole' stringing . Fitted with original rococo-design cast-brass handle to the lid ,and rococo escutcheon to the front . Veneered in mahogany onto an oak frame , constructed in the same manner as a typical larger piece of case furniture from the mid C18th .

The interior fitted with 3 individual removable canisters or tea boxes with unusual faceted 'pyramid' sliding lids . The interiors of which are lined with traces of original silvered foil. Behind the compartments is a lateral baize-lined shallow 'shelf'. Fitted with original brass hinges and an old replacement steel lock (no key).

Good grade of figured mahogany which has attained a rich patina . Historic crack to curl of veneer to one end .
