M Lees and Sons has dated this piece to the 1870s.
. The moulded-edge lid cast with a fantastical woodland hunting scene with central equestrian figure mounted astride a mythical unicorn , surrounded by hounds , attendants and falconers. The front panel , sides and rear panels all cast with detailed scrolling foliage , gryphons , figures , animals and amorini.

The double-hinged lid enclosing a cedar-wood lined interior.
Fitted with a lock , though key is lacking.
The underside with single "hallmark" style stamp , which appears to depict the winged lion of St.Mark , probably denoting its manufacture in Venice .
Excellent condition . Good consistent patination.
