Rare Military Campaign Captain's Writing Slope

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Pareglio & Ayres Antiques Interiors

An early 19th century brass bound Military Campaign Ship Captain’s writing box in mahogany, of large proportions. This slope has a screw-down mechanism allowing it to be secured to a table whilst the ship is at sea. At the back of the slope, a pair of brass fold out arms holds two brass candle sconces (these are replacement sconces) which can be set above the leather writing surface, which was probably a felt surface originally. There is an unusual secret compartment as well. The reading lectern (probably replaced) is kept under the lower section of the box. In this section, glued to the underside of the writing flap, is “The London Almanack for the year of our Lord 1805” giving various pieces of information including High Water at London Bridge. There are a couple of shrinkage cracks to the box and marks consistent with the age and use of this rare and interesting Ship Captain’s Writing Box.
