This is a good quality gentlemen’s antique Victorian Colonial teak vanity box used in the British military in India, circa 1870, which is in excellent condition. The box features an internal replacement mirror, held in place by the original hooks. The mirror, which is attached to the lid, is hinged in a way, so that the angle of the mirror can be adjusted to four different angles. Within the box, there is a single sliding tray containing several compartments. To the exterior of the box are two inset steel handles, situated at the front and back of the box, which allowed the box to be easily transported whilst on campaigns. The box features a working lock (with key) that is situated at the front of the box.

The box would have been commissioned for an army officer in the British military / Raj and would have been used during the colonization of India whilst on duty in the field.

The box boasts a rich red/brown teak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

This truly is a very beautiful item with quality construction and is original throughout. It is rare to see one in such good condition. This item would certainly grace any home. So don't miss out your chance to own such a lovely antique item.

Condition Report:

The item is in excellent condition, which is commensurate with its age. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the box but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The box is completely original; the only item, which has been replaced, is the mirror. The original hinges are in excellent work order and the lid closes flush to the frame of the box. The box features the original working lock and key and original internal tray. The inset steel military handles are also original, with some tarnishing. The interior is dry and clean. The box is solid in joint and ready to use.
