Large Japanese Ivory and Shibayama Lidded Box

1900 - 1920
Description

As part of our oriental collection we are delighted to offer this large and fine quality Japanese ivory lidded box decorated throughout in the shibayama style , the tapered tusk section is finely inlaid to the front with a scene of a manchurian crane amidst birds butterflies and insects in a garden setting , the rear depicts a fine spray of native flora again surrounded by butterflies and insects , the lid is also nicely detailed with various insects crawling around its exterior , the quality of the inlaid semi precious stone inlays are far higher than the usual boxes of this type.

The condition of the tusk section is lovely with no losses of shibayama and due to its thick grade of ivory no damages , the oval lid is again a good gauge of ivory with no losses to the shibayama and only a couple of old stable hairlines worth noting , a great lidded box !
