Unusual Mahogany Stationery Box

Description

Circa 1870, unusual mahogany stationery box in the form of a seaman’s kist. The top has parquetry inlay in various woods and a thick moulding. Inside the lid is a fielded panel and evidence of various divisions, mostly removed. At the sides are military style flush handles and there is a stylish escutcheon on the front which follows the moulded edge. In the base is a single drawer, again with flush handles, and this opens to reveal various compartments for pens etc. An unusual feature is at the back is a brass retainer to prevent the lid from falling and damaging the hinges. The moulding on the top is screwed from the inside and held in position by small brass screws. Unusual and stylish stationery box.

Size 22cm high x 26cm wide x 19cm deep.
