Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1800s.
It retains its original brass side handles and ivory escutcheon.
This relatively plain (though attractive) exterior conceals the delightful interior, with a marquetry-framed mirror within the lid; and a superbly fitted removable tray with 20 small compartments all of which are arranged around the central oval recess. The leading edges of these compartments are all delicately inlaid.
When this tray is removed, there is revealed the vacant compartment below, itself beautifully inlaid with a lattice design in boxwood and ebony. Working (though later) key. 14ins x 8ins (35 x 20cms)
This is an unusual box ~ charming; completely original and in lovely condition.
