Exquisite Japanese Ivory & Shibayama Lidded Box

Description

As part of our oriental collection we are delighted to offer this charming Japanese ivory and shibayama box to the market , the six sided box is formed from a solid hardwood frame which has been finely and painstakingly onlaid with sections of ivory, each individually carved to represent bamboo, the box stands on three bamboo section ivory legs and even has its original paper label to the underside.

The lid of this box is inset with an ivory panel that has been decorated in the shibayama style using ivory, mother of pearl and semi precious stones, the subject is delightful and shows a farmer hand feeding a Manchurian crane , the seed he drops is so fine it is difficult to comprehend the patience required to produce work of this quality, a simply magnificent lidded box.
