Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1880s.
Of particular interest to the serious Chess Collector, and almost certainly a "one-off" special order, this stunning set firstly comes with its own fitted brass-bound oak case, with recessed military style brass carrying handle; original Bramah lock and key, and engraved escutcheon: "Dr. Welch".
Nestling inside the velvet-lined interior, the folding chess board is constructed of solid beautifully-figured rosewood, the board of rosewood and boxwood, whilst the pieces are of white and red-stained IVORY.
There are locking slides in brass to both sides, and it is signed on an engraved brass plaque: "Jaques & Son Makers, LONDON". A wonderful chess set!
