Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1860s.
The lid opens to reveal two beautifully fitted lift-out trays and a further compartment in the base. Each of these trays is lined in navy leather and purple velvet, all of which is original, with compartments for rings; necklaces; earrings; watch etc. As good a jewellery box as one is likely to find.
"Rare" because many jewellery boxes are converted from other boxes and later retro-fitted; this is original throughout.
