A Very Good Tortoiseshell Tea Caddy

Description

A very good example of a late 18th or early 19th century TORTOISESHELL TEA CADDY in beautiful condition.

The top is of the popular "tented" type, with individual panels strung with ivory and surmounted by the original (silver?) bow handle. This opens to reveal the interior (traces of original lead lining) and the pair of tortoiseshell lids, also with matching bow handles.

The front has a mother-of-pearl escutcheon and oval silver cartouche ornately engraved with the initial "M" and surrounded by a delicate border of mother-of-pearl pique work. A very superior caddy.
