Superb Playing Card Box in Unused Condition

Description

A very fine quality mid-Victorian PLAYING CARD BOX, probably by Betjemann, in wonderful 'mint' condition.

The domed well-figured coromandel-wood box is bound in gilt brass, and opens to reveal the contents in pristine condition which include:

* Ivory cribbage and marker boards

* For packs of original playing cards

* Set of 4 leather Bezique markers

* Pr. of ebony & ivory "hand" markers

* Full set of eight ivory pegs

* Rules for Bezique (dated 1870) etc.

The condition of the gilded parts (hinges' lock' escutcheon etc) verify that this has hardly ever been used. Signed by the retailer:

H. Rodrigues, 42 Piccadilly (LONDON) on a gilded tablet to the rear.
