Stunning Naval Captains Mahogany & Brass Campaign Writing Box

Description

Without a doubt the finest ships captains box we have ever owned , this magnificent early 19th century box has everything you could wish for , the cuban mahogany timbers are bound in superb hand screwed brass bound edging strips for protection, with a lot more decorative brass both inside and out, the top opens to reveal a huge writing surface covered in a replaced gilt tooled black leather, one side of the leather suface opens to reveal storage space and a hiding hole for the brass pegged mahogany book rest(later ) , the locking side opens to reveal what looks like three compartments , however further investigation reveals a hidden compartment with three drawers plus a further hidden compartment with a pull out storage tray hiding two more secret drawers , the front section houses brass lined lids with storage under plus the original brass lidded ink well , also in this area we find the brass peg that releases the under drawer and two sunken bolts that enable the box to be screwed down to the timber deck or desk ? plus the original iron key housed in its brass holder .

The three lever lock movement is stamped Turners patent below a crown symbol and comes with two new keys .

I could go on and on , the condition is gorgeous , lovely colour timber with old useage stains and marks under the polish , this box is very substantial weighing over 13.5kg (30lbs) empty, if you want a perfect clean Victorian writing slope then this isnt for you , however if you would like the best quality campaign box currently available then this is it , dont miss out !!
