Superb Japanese Shibayama Ivory Box and Cover Meiji Period 1868-1912

1900 - 1920
Description

The first of our shibayama pieces is this delightfull oval box and cover not only inlaid on the top but also around the outside edge, the lid is profusely inlaid with semi precious stones and mother of pearl depicting a bird in flight above a decorative spray of exotic flora , the outer sections are also profusely inlaid with floral sprays and birds in flight .

The box is made of a tusk section with a lid and base inserted to form a usefull container , other than minor age and shrinkage cracks it is in remarkable condition , i cannot find any losses but better say minor losses just in case !!

Length 9.5cm or 3 3/4"

Depth 7.75cm or 3"

Height 2.5cm or 1"
