It was listed by Puckerings. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.
Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1800s.
The box is beautifully decorated with intricate Mother of Pearl inlay (a tiny piece above the escutcheon filled or discoloured), featuring birds to the top and front, all framed with thick polished Pewter stringing.

Once opened, the splendid lid interior is revealed with the original Burgundy coloured leather with tooled and gilded decoration is revealed. The original silver catch is intact to open this section revealing a compartment for the storage of papers.

With the lid opened, the flat Rosewood surface is revealed with the two inkwells either side of two lidded compartments. The front section then unfolds again (hence the name "double action") to reveal the writing surface with it's original Burgundy leather.

Both flaps of the surface open to reveal storage space below. The secret drawers are revealed by removing the right-hand inkwell and pressing on the base beneath which releases the sprung cover with the two drawers behind, each with a small turned Ivory know (both slightly different in design).

The box has been beautifully re-polished to protect the wood and also covers the flush brass handles to slope them from tarnishing. The handle cannot be opened as this would break the seal and often the old brass is very fragile.
A fabulous and very aesthetically appealing box in superb condition. While closed it measures 15" x 10" x 4 3/4". Papers and pen not included in the sale. Key not working - included for display purposes.
