Description

A lovely early example of an Artist's personal watercolour box dating to around 1820.

Made from Mahogany, this is a decorative example with brass stringing inlaid to the lid with a central shaped plaque matching the shaped escutcheon which houses the working key.

The interior of the lid retains the original paper label:

" T.J. Morris, Manufacturer of Superfine Water Colors in Cakes And Fine Hair Pencils. In Ordinary to Her Jajesty Princefs Victoria & the Duke of Sufsex. London and 28, Colmore Row, Birmingham. Where Artists may be supplied with water colors in complete sets with Lead Pencils, Drawing Papers, Crayons, Chalks and every article in Drawing - Fancy Stationery."

There is a removable tray where the various cakes of paint are affixed to, obviously not all original but various cakes including Ackermann, Reeves and the like. Again the white porcelain and glass water dish are later than the box, and the two porcelain palettes in the drawer.

The drawer is accessed by removing the brass pin next to the lock. There is a flush inlaid handle to open the drawer which has the original owner's name engraved "T Lewis".

A lovely box in excellent condition, measuring 9 3/4" x 5" x 3 1/4".

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
