Fabulous Brass Bound Mahogany Military / Campaign Double Action Writing Box C.1820

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

A lovely early lap desk or writing slope, George III in period, around 1820. Made from solid Mahogany, this is a solid and heavy box bound together by top-notch brass fittings with a quality screwed construction; this includes the large front escutcheon plate which houses the working key.

This is a more unusual form with what is known as a double or dual action. The lid lifts to reveal a beautiful and original interior with a deep Burgundy coloured leather with fine gold embossing. The inside of the lid is fitted with a leather fall-front portfolio with which would be used to store papers and letters.

There is a small writing slope on this "level" but can then be opened again to form a larger writing surface, the top half opening with storage below. The leather is just wonderful and original with some wear, but quite exceptional being nearly 200 years old.

There is a central lidded compartment for the storage of pens and other writing accessories, a silver plated topped inkwell to the left and a sloped pen nib storage compartment to the right.

The box has been professionally re-polished to gleam, my restorer polishes over the lift up handles to protect the finish of the brass without maintenance; so to lift the handles out the finish would have to be broken around the handle. A really wonderful box in excellent condition measuring 11 3/4" x 9 1/2" x 4 1/2" tall while closed.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
