Art-deco Vedette Westminster-chime Wall Clock

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Masons Antiques
Description

A very fine and original Art-Deco wall clock by the renowned maker La Vedette.

The 8 day, Westminster chime movement strikes on the quarters and the hour with a crisp, melodic chime. The movement has just been fully overhauled by our BHI registered horologist and carries our usual 12 mths full parts and labour guarantee.

The mahogany case is nicely polished with a rich, age related patina.

The octagonal, silvered dial has canted corners with black Arabic numerals and is clearly marked with the maker's name. It is in pristine condition.

The lower half of the fully opening door is correspondingly glazed with a silvered art-deco style patterning, and allowing the octagonal, silvered pendulum to be seen working. A silvered handle compliments the dial and contrasts beautifully with the mahogany case.

A very modern looking clock that is complete with key and ready to go straight to work.

Worldwide delivery available.

All cards accepted.

Art Deco wall clocks originated in the 1920s and 1930s, characterised by streamlined geometric forms, symmetry, and architectural casing. They often feature canted corners, angular Arabic numerals, walnut or oak veneers, and glazed apertures displaying the internal pendulum mechanism.

These timepieces were typically constructed using solid timber frames faced with figurative veneers such as walnut, oak, or mahogany. The mechanical movements were cast from brass and steel, while front doors featured leaded or bevelled glass panels held by metal cames.

Authentic period examples feature key-wind mechanical movements rather than battery-powered quartz mechanisms. Look for manufacturer stamps on the movement backplate, period-appropriate sans-serif or geometric typography on the dial, and hand-fitted leaded glass apertures.

Position the clock on a plain or subtly textured wall to highlight its geometric silhouette. The deep timber tone pairs effectively with contemporary neutral paint palettes, muted green backdrops, or minimalist mid-century sideboards.

Ensure the clock case is hung perfectly level on the wall to maintain an even beat. Wind the mechanism weekly using the correct size key, dust the timber casing with a soft dry cloth, and have the internal movement oiled by a professional horologist every three to five years.
